The Best Breakfast in Tórshavn
I will start this post by clarifying that I’ve not had breakfast at all the cafés in Tórshavn. I was in Tórshavn for five days and did something different for breakfast on each of those days. And since there aren’t 50 cafés to choose from in Tórshavn, when I use the superlative (in ‘Best’ Breakfast in Tórshavn), I don’t think I’m way out of line in my estimate or taking a shot in the dark.
The best breakfast in Tórshavn is at Kaffi Húsið. At the marina, the location of Kaffi Húsið is splendid and a catnip for photographers. While the interior is not particularly atmospheric – the location is perfect. In summer, many customers (mostly locals) choose to sit outside and enjoy the summer sun.
Kaffi Húsið is not exactly reasonable if you benchmark it against Café Natúr (which is only 5 minutes away on foot). For instance, a cappuccino at Kaffi Húsið is for 35 DKK, whereas it’s for 25 DKK at Café Natúr. A hot chocolate at Kaffi Húsið is priced at 45 DKK, while at Café Natúr it’s for 30 DKK. You can even have a club sandwich (served with chicken, bacon, salad, and curry sauce) at Café Natúr for a mere 70 DKK. But the quality of just about everything you order at Kaffi Húsið is a class apart. Kaffi Húsið was always packed with people enjoying coffee, beer, sparkling wine, croissants, cakes, crêpes served with rhubarb jam and whipped cream et cetera – and on weekends, at least half the patrons order the ‘weekend breakfast plate’ for 165 DKK which consists of various bread with butter, cheese, Spanish sausage, jam, skyr with maple syrup and muesli, soft boiled egg, bacon, fresh fruit, raw vegetable sticks with parsley and lemon oil, and fresh orange juice. There’s ‘breakfast plate’ on weekdays as well from 9 a.m. to 12 noon – it has all that’s on the ‘weekend breakfast plate’ minus the bacon and fresh fruit – and is priced at 104 DKK which I think is a very good deal.
While Kaffi Húsið seemed to be more of a breakfast venue – they have some great options for lunch too which are served post 11:30 a.m. For instance, there’s a chicken salad with fennel and feta cheese (112 DKK), soup of the day with bread (72 DKK), panini with chicken, bacon and vegetables (89 DKK), panini with two kinds of Spanish sausage (89 DKK), and a lunch plate which consists of a soup, salad, and panini (165 DKK).
The layer cakes (45 DKK) were completely delicious and I would recommend them for anyone with a sweet tooth.
On Tripadvisor, currently ranked number 6 of 30 restaurants in Tórshavn, for me, Kaffi Húsið earns top marks across all the key parameters: friendly staff, value for money, quality of food, and location.
